SEN Teaching Assistant – Chester ASD & Non-verbal

Desian Education are proud to be working in partnership with a highly regarded SEND specialist school in Chester that supports pupils aged 4–19, predominantly with a dual diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and non-verbal communication needs.

 

The school are seeking a dedicated and experienced Teaching Assistant to join a small Year 6 class of just five pupils, providing personalised support within a highly nurturing and specialist environment.

 

Your new role:

This is an excellent opportunity for a Teaching Assistant with a genuine passion for supporting pupils with complex communication and additional needs. You will work closely with the class teacher and wider specialist team to provide consistent, individualised support throughout the school day.

Your responsibilities will include:

·       Providing 1:1 and small-group support within a Year 6 SEND classroom.

·       Using Makaton and PECS to support pupils’ communication and independence.

·       Implementing traffic light systems and other visual communication strategies.

·       Delivering targeted speech and communication interventions.

·       Working collaboratively with Speech and Language Therapists (SALT) to implement recommended strategies and programmes.

·       Supporting pupils with their academic, social and emotional development.

·       Providing assistance with personal and intimate care where required.

·       Promoting positive behaviour, independence and confidence throughout the school day.

·       Working as part of a close-knit, multidisciplinary team to ensure pupils receive consistent and effective support.

 

What you need to succeed:

·       Previous classroom-based SEND experience.

·       Experience supporting pupils with ASD and complex communication needs.

·       Confidence using, or a willingness to develop skills in, Makaton and PECS.

·       Experience delivering or supporting speech and communication interventions.

·       A calm, patient and nurturing approach.

·       The ability to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils.

·       A willingness to support with personal/intimate care.

·       Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

·       A genuine passion for helping pupils with additional needs reach their full potential.
