SEN Teaching Assistant – SEMH Support

Desian Education are working in partnership with a specialist SEND school in Northwich that supports pupils aged 4–11. The school are looking to appoint a resilient, compassionate and experienced Teaching Assistant to join a small Year 5 class on a full-time basis after the October half-term.

The class consists of 8 pupils with significant SEMH needs, many of whom have experienced extreme deprivation and require a highly consistent, nurturing and trauma-informed approach to support their emotional regulation and engagement with learning.

This is a particularly rewarding role for a Teaching Assistant who understands that behaviour is a form of communication. Pupils may present complex behavioural requirements and, at times, display physical behaviours such as lashing out. These behaviours should not be viewed as personal attacks, but rather as a potential coping mechanism or expression of emotional distress.

The role will involve:

·       Supporting pupils within a small Year 5 specialist SEND class

·       Developing strong, trusting relationships with pupils

·       Supporting pupils with significant SEMH and emotional regulation needs

·       Implementing consistent and positive behaviour strategies

·       Recognising triggers and using proactive approaches to reduce escalation

·       Supporting pupils during periods of dysregulation in line with school policies

·       Helping pupils engage with learning and develop greater independence

·       Working closely with the class teacher and wider SEND team

·       Providing a calm, patient and predictable presence throughout the school day

What you need to succeed:

·       Has previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH and complex behavioural needs

·       Has experience within a SEND or specialist education setting

·       Understands the impact of trauma, deprivation and adverse experiences on behaviour

·       Is confident supporting pupils who may display physical or challenging behaviours

·       Can remain calm and composed during periods of escalation

·       Is patient, empathetic and highly consistent

·       Understands the importance of building relationships before expecting engagement

·       Is resilient and committed to helping pupils overcome barriers to learning

·       Can work effectively as part of a close-knit specialist team
