Teaching Assistant – Year 5 1:1 & SEMH Support

Desian Education are working in partnership with a large, two-form entry primary school in Widnes, situated at the heart of its local community. The school are seeking a dedicated and experienced Teaching Assistant to join their Year 5 team on a full-time basis.

This is a varied and rewarding opportunity for a Teaching Assistant with experience supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, who can provide consistent 1:1 support while also contributing to the wider classroom environment.

Your new role:

You will provide 1:1 support to a select group of pupils within the Year 5 class who have experienced significant adversity and trauma and require additional SEMH support. The role will involve building trusting relationships, promoting emotional regulation and helping pupils engage positively with their learning.

Alongside your 1:1 responsibilities, you will play an important role in supporting the wider class through targeted interventions and positive behaviour strategies.

Key responsibilities:

·       Providing consistent 1:1 support to identified pupils within Year 5

·       Supporting pupils with SEMH and emotional regulation needs

·       Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced trauma and adversity

·       Delivering intensive core subject interventions for lower-ability pupils

·       Supporting literacy and numeracy progress through targeted 1:1 and small-group work

·       Supporting and delivering ELSA interventions where appropriate

·       Taking an active role in positive behaviour management across the classroom

·       Helping pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence

·       Working closely with the class teacher and wider pastoral team

·       Maintaining a calm, consistent and nurturing approach throughout the school day

What you need to succeed:

·       Has previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant within a primary school

·       Has experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs

·       Understands the impact that trauma and adversity can have on behaviour and learning

·       Is confident delivering targeted interventions in core subjects

·       Has experience with, or an interest in, ELSA and emotional wellbeing support

·       Is confident managing behaviour using positive and proactive strategies

·       Is patient, resilient and able to build strong relationships with pupils

·       Can work collaboratively with teachers and wider school staff
