Job Title: SEND Teaching Assistant (Specialist Resource Base)

Hours: 08:30 – 15:30, Monday to Friday (Term time only)
Start Date: Immediately following the upcoming half-term
Desian Education is recruiting a passionate and knowledgeable SEND Teaching Assistant to work within a dedicated specialist resource base at a primary school in St Helens. This long-term role offers the opportunity to make a profound impact on the development of children with complex learning needs.
The Role
Specialist Support: Work daily inside the school’s SEND base, supporting pupils with a variety of needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Communication Strategies: Assist and engage with non-verbal pupils using tailored communication tools and visual aids (e.g., PECS, Makaton, or visual timetables).
Tailored Learning: Adapt class activities to meet individual Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) alongside the base lead.
De-escalation: Implement positive behaviour strategies and sensory breaks to support pupils feeling overwhelmed.
Personal Care: Provide essential support with personal care, lunchtime routines, and mobility where required.
Requirements
Proven Experience: Significant previous experience working with children with SEND in either a primary school or a residential care setting.
Strong Knowledge: A deep understanding of complex needs, neurodiversity, and effective support strategies.
Qualifications: A relevant SEND qualification is desirable but not essential; strong, practical experience is highly valued.
Compliance: Must hold an enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to process a new one.
